TSC to Replace JSS Intern Teachers in 2025
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is starting the replacement of junior secondary school (JSS) intern teachers using existing merit lists. At least 1,645 JSS interns from the 20,000 recruited in January 2025 for secured permanent and pensionable (PNP) jobs after TSC advertised 5,862 replacement slots for teachers who left service. These teachers got appointment letters and have started their roles after vetting from February 17–28, 2025, and registering with the Social Health Authority (SHA) at afyayangu.go.ke. TSC declared 5,862 primary, 21 JSS, and 2,824 secondary school posts, awarding interns 50 marks on the scoresheet.
TSC plans to recruit 18,000 JSS interns in November 2025 and 18,000 PNP teachers for primary and post-primary schools in the 2025–2026 financial year. Currently, TSC faces a shortage of 72,422 JSS teachers, needing 149,350 total for Grades 7–9, with 76,928 (51.5%) employed, including 20,000 interns, 39,550 confirmed interns, 8,378 deployed P1 teachers, and 9,000 PNP teachers. CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia says 229,292 teachers have been retrained on CBC since April 2019, with 60,642 JSS teachers retrained from May 2023 to November 2024. TSC will deploy 6,000 PTE teachers to JSS in April 2025.
The Teacher Internship Programme lasts one year (often two) to build teaching skills through mentorship, targeting unemployed registered teachers. Interns earn Ksh 15,000 (primary) or Ksh 20,000 (JSS) monthly, with statutory deductions, and receive a certificate upon completion. Eligibility requires a PTE/DPTE certificate for primary or a Diploma with C+ in KCSE and two subjects for JSS, plus TSC registration. Applicants need a TSC certificate, ID, NHIF card, KRA PIN, NCPWD card (if applicable), and two passport photos for verification.
